This was the time when Samrat Mahedra Pal divided his vast Empire between his two sons and loyalty of Gujjar fuedatories like Gujjar Chauhans, Gujjar Parmars, Gujjar Chandillas etc. etc were divided. Ultimately around 915AD Samrat Mahi Pal established himself on the throne of Gujjar Empire but a Great clan of Baghrawat Chauhans of Gujjars was already sacrificed due to this division of loyalties of various fuedatory kings and their vassals to these two Gujjar Pratihar Princes.

The small kingdom of the Gurjar Chandels of Khajuraho were always a part of this large empire of the Gurjar Pratiharas, the extent of which varied with the fortunes of the kings. The Gurjar Chandela rulers for about hundred years that is, from Nannuk till Harsh Dev, were but vassals of the Gurjar Pratiharas. They proclaimed themselves independent when the Gurjar Pratihara empire weakened and disintegrated. Earlier, the Gurjar Pratiharas helped the Gurjar Chandelas and other kings of the region in defending the country from the aggression of Muslim invaders from the Middle East. This collective defense against the invaders rendered security in the region which created favorable circumstances for encouraging art and culture. The founder of the Chandela dynasty, Nannuk was the ruler of a small kingdom. According to inscriptions, he was the chief of his clan in the first quarter of the ninth century. Epigraphic records show that Khajuraho, then called Khajuravatika -Bearer of Dates or Khajuravatika - Garden of Dates, was the stronghold of Nannuk and his people. Later on, his descendants linked their lineage with the Moon or with Chandratreya of the legend, in order to attribute some divine links to the origin of their dynasty. Vakapati succeeded his father Nannuk during the second quarter of the ninth century. The celebrated Gurjar king, Mihir Bhoja was his contemporary. Samrat Mihir Bhoj had to fight many battles against his two deadly enemies, the Devpal of Bengal and Kokal, the Kalchuri king. Vakapati the ruler of Khajuraho, had to often assist Pratiharas in the battle field, because he was a vassal of the Pratiharas. Attachments:

Kalinjar is a fortress-city in the Bundelkhand region of central India. Kalinjar is located in Banda District of Uttar Pradesh state, near the temple-city and World Heritage Site of Khajuraho. The fortress is strategically located on an isolated rocky hill at the end the Vindhya Range, at an elevation of 1203 feet overlooking the plains of Bundelkhand. It served several of Bundelkhand's ruling dynasties, including the Gurjar Chandela dynasty of in the 10th century, and the Gurjar Solankis of Rewa. The majesty and grandeur witnessed within Kalinjar's precincts is due to the Gujrar rulers' creative imagination, their highly developed aesthetic sense and religious fervor. Though they were great devotees of Lord Shiva, they evinced a great interest in the construction of temples of other deities, too. The massive rock cut sculptures include figures of various gods and goddesses from ancient mythological themes. Wherever the Gurjar had established their reign they left their mark by enriching them with fine works of art, stone images, and sculpture. Attachments:
