The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) has called 56 players for the Under-25 selection trials, which began at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground on Wednesday. DDCA sports secretary said former India player Yashpal Sharma, who is the chief coach, will conduct the trials.

NEW DELHI, May 20: Kamal Chopra (42) and Kesar Choudhry (50) helped Madras Club score a five-wicket victory over FCI in a A division match of the DDCA League at the Kotla No 1 ground.
An unbeaten 50 by Haryana off-spinner Pankaj Thakur heled FCI reach 189 for nine in the stipulated 40 overs. Madras Club replied with 190 for five in 38.3 overs.
In a C division match at the Kotla No 2 ground, Syndicate Bank beat Gemini by 177 runs.

New Delhi, October 19 The DDCA is in the news, though for all the wrong reasons: a brawl over team selection between an under-15 selector and a former Delhi cricketer.
Former cricketer Ram Babu Aggarwal has told IP Estate police that under-15 selector Kesar Chaudhary assaulted him in the card room inside Feroze Shah Kotla Stadium on Thursday evening. DDCA operates from the stadium.
Chaudhary has denied the charges.
Aggarwal said they had a row over a player’s name in the under-15 probables list on Thursday morning. “I did not see Chaudhary all day since that spat,” he said. “Around 9 pm, after I had had a couple of drinks at DDCA bar, I went to the card room. Suddenly, Chaudhary and some nine or ten men appeared out of nowhere and began beating me up.”
They hit with chairs and sticks, Aggarwal said. “Somehow I returned home; I did not approach the police till 3 pm today since I felt unwell.”
Chaudhary denied the allegations. He said he left the stadium after the row. “I didn’t return there the whole day. I don’t know why he is accusing me,” Chaudhary said. “I am a fair selector; all my decisions are genuine.”
He said Aggarwal’s “track record” shows many past “incidents of violence” with officials. Police are yet to register a case.

Not just a scare, but ‘instruction’ from the top
In a shocking revelation, selectors blame DDCA’s lack of spine in protecting their own people and added that two executive committee members had actually instructed them to include Tomar in the squad.

New Delhi, March 6: Nine O’Clock in the morning, February 15. The phone rang, and a voice on the other end had a one-line message. “The president has sacked you and your committee with immediate effect.” Anil Jain, then chairman of the Delhi selection committee, was a relieved man.
It has been a month since their unanimous decision to induct Navdeep Tomar in the Delhi ODI team earned them the sack, but the real story is yet to come out.
Sportline eventually convinced all the five members who were sacked —- selectors Anil Jain, Vivek Razdan, Bantoo Singh, Sunil Khanna and assistant coach MS Jaggi —- to come out with their versions.
And in a shocking revelation, they blame DDCA’s lack of spine in protecting their own people and added that two executive committee members had actually instructed the selectors to include Tomar in the squad. The “threats” were a reason put forth by the selectors.”
“Yes, I use to get threats, every selector use to get threats. Everybody in the DDCA top brass knew it, yet everyone kept quiet and instead sacked us. Nobody came to me to seek any explanation as to why we were forced to put his name,” says Jain.
Then comes Sunil Khanna’s shocker: “At a special meeting at a top DDCA executive member’s residence — that included one of the vice-presidents — selectors were told that they had spoken to all concerned and gave their nod for adding a 16th member in the team. The selectors weer instructed to include Navdeep and Kesar Chaudhary’s name. Yet, we met the same evening and named just 15 members and didn’t give in to the pressure. That same set of people, suddenly changed colours and sacked us,” says Khanna.
Strangely, for a unit that made news for internal squabbles and differences, none in the DDCA ever thought it proper to seek any clarification on a unanimous decision.
This despite, Sunil Dev, convener selection committee and DDCA sports secretary, admitting: “Yes, we were aware that the selectors were under pressure, but we didn’t expect them to bow to it.”
“Why not?” asks MS Jaggi. “When Madan Lal was roughed up within the DDCA premises and I was held hostage, the DDCA didn’t even bother to register a complaint. Instead they refused to be party to it asked me to go on my own and file an FIR. Yes, we received threats over people’s inclusion and that was why the meetings were held at Arun Jaitley’s residence. DDCA cannot feign ignorance to our plight,” he says rueing that his earlier credentials, where he took Delhi to the finals and even won the Ranji trophy, didn’t count for much.
That is probably the position and stand of the selectors. However logical it may seem, it cannot be justified by logic and ethics. Especially in a democracy, when the selectors could easily have resigned in protest. The deeper cause, therefore, is in an internal ‘instruction’ to include Tomar.
Vivek Razdan, selector and former India paceman, says he’s okay with the sack, but adds that the matter needs thorough investigation. “I did a wrong thing by signing on the team, and if they have sacked me it’s good. They have reacted to something wrong but then they should have acted earlier too, so that such thing would have never happened in the first place.”
Razdan has a further revelation. “As for Navdeep, promises had been certainly made to him. By who, is what has to be found. Sacking us is not an answer; the root cause has to be investigated.”
Bantoo Singh agrees. “If Navdeep was our candidate, we would have put him in the team at the first opportunity. After we saw what happened to Madan Lal and Jaggi, we decided that today it was them, tomorrow it could be us.”

New Delhi, December 16: To say that Delhi cricket is going through a bad phase is an understatement. The senior team hasn’t done well in the new Ranji Trophy format, having lost outright to Mumbai and managing just first-innings lead over the Railways and Himachal Pradesh, after being placed in a comfortable position at one stage to force victory. In the just-concluded one-dayers, Delhi failed to qualify.
Things were no different in junior cricket. While the under-19 boys barely managed to survive after early shocks, the under-17 squad finished fourth in the zone, losing to even Jammu and Kashmir.
The delay in naming the coaches for the senior team and selection of players for all teams basically has been the reasons for Delhi cricket’s poor show so far this season.
But the selectors seem to have hardly learnt from the bitter lessons. They initially announced a 56-member squad for under-25 on December 3 which was cut to 33 players (including seven u-19 players) on December 14 for ‘further trials.’ Conspicuously absent from the selectors meeting on December 14 were Kirti Azad (national selector) and Venkat Sundaram.
One fails to understand the reason for first announcing such a big squad (56) and then after 10 days reducing it by just 23. Delhi are scheduled to take on Jammu and Kashmir in their first zonal under-25 match at Jammu on January 2. And some of the players still retained in the list of 33 is not something for the connoissers of the game to cherish. There are still several names in the squad that should not have figured even in the original 56.
Well, if that is the way Delhi cricket continues to function, one can rightly forget about any rennaissance of the game in the Capital. Groupism/clubism continues to dominate selections at all levels. Despite rich talent, the right persons are hardly chosen at the right time. No wonder then people are seeking to move to neighbouring states and getting their due there.
Well, Delhi surely doesn’t need a Bishan Singh Bedi if the DDCA authorities (whoever they may be) continue to act keeping only their self-interest in mind and not that of the Capital’s cricket. The sad part is the DDCA president hasn’t been able to put a check to the rot that is setting in at the Capital’s cricket headquarters.

New Delhi, Oct 20 : Virender Sehwag was Wednesday retained captain of Delhi for the 2004-05 cricket season starting next month as two selectors walked out of a meeting allegedly to protest manoeuvring by their colleagues.
Former India Test opener and co-chairman Chetan Chauhan and Anil Jain walked out of the meeting, chaired by former India batsman Yashpal Sharma, at which 27 probables were decided upon.
A Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) statement listed eight other players who, according to sources, were allegedly picked after the walkout.
DDCA has taken the plea that the eight were invited "so that the selectors can have another look at them along with the chairman Yashpal Sharma, who was away on duty for the second Test match (against Australia) at Chennai, and thereafter they will add three more names".
The contentious selections are Chetan Nanda, Navdeep Tomar, Joginder Singh, Kesar Chaudhary, Puneet Bisht, Suhail Sharma, Premvir Nagar and Surinder Kumar.
There are three notable omissions from last year's squad -- Harinder Chaudhary, Vishal Sharma and Puru Raj Singh.
The panel named Ajay Jadeja as vice-captain, though in effect he will lead the side in the absence of Sehwag, who will be away most of the season doing duty for India.
Besides Yashpal, Chauhan and Jain, other selectors who attended the meeting were Kirti Azad, Sunil Khanna, N.P. Singh, team coach Madan Lal, government nominee Vibhakar Shastri and convenor Sunil Dev.
The probables were asked to report to coach Madan Lal at the National Stadium at 8.30 a.m. Thursday.
