Hi Gujjar Mandal, I had heard for quite some time that there are lots of Gujjars in Pakistani Tribal areas on the border with Afghanistan. Here is a news item about them in a fierce fight. Following is a translation of a news item which is printed in today's Jang newspaper: www.jang.com.pk/jang/aug2008-daily/29-08-2008/update.htm#89Start quote: Parachinar: Toori Tribe repels attack from adversaries, three attackers perishParachinar...... In Kurram Agency's Anzari area, Toori tribes have defeated a big attack of their opponents. In this incident, three attackers were killed and six wounded. According to sources, in the Anzari area of lower Kurram Agency, opponents of Toori Tribes, i.e. Bangash Tribes and their allies, launched an attack. In response, the Toori Tribes fought back and repelled them. In this operation, three attackers were killed and six others wounded. Noted religious leader, Allama Mohammad Nawaz Irfani, on behalf of Toori Tribes said that inspite of cease fire the attack of adversary tribes is regretful. He has demanded of the Government to end its dubious silence and take action against the perpetrators. Skirmishes continuing for four weeks have resulted in over 500 deaths and more than 700 injured in Kurram Agency. end quote. Above news item is accompanied by an impressive group photo of Toor Tribe fighters. It seems their numbers are pretty good in those areas. There is a Member of Pakistan National Assembly Mr. Sajid Hussain Turi as listed at: www.na.gov.pk/fata.html

There is a Member of Pakistan National Assembly Mr. Sajid Hussain Turi as listed at: www.na.gov.pk/fata.html"Toori tribe?" means the descendents of Tourman the Hun? If it is right then I have to think about writing a book over Huns' (hepthalite's) impact on South asian subcontinent. Lots of Gujjar tribe carry the hun leader's name as their caste: (known as torman actual name was touram-han or tomar-han or touram-khan). They currently use many different surnames e.g Tomars (delhi Gujjars, UP, MP Jats), Tanwars (Delhi, Rajastahn Gujjars, Rajasthan, MP Rajputs), Tours (Jats and Gujjars in UP and MP) and Tamars (Gujjar Maharshatra and Gujrat). Huns or Hans were actually a subgroup of main chehci (yuchi or kuchi or gujar). It separated from kushans after 3rd centry AD and came back as a storm with a new name hepthlite. Amazing but 90% gujjar -rajput ruling clans after 5th century AD came from this hun stock including Gurjar-pratihars (And all the offshoots), tomars and chohans. Another notable thing is the repeatation of jabila or javila or jabula name in the various gujjar settlements of gujjars e.g jabalpur, jaavli and jabalpuri etc. Need more research... Ashok Ji, I don't know the historical background. I was basing Toori identity with Gujjars based on verbal accounts on Gujjars in Tribal Areas and on the Gotra's listed on this site partly reproduced here: "T. Taak, Taamar, Taanwar, Tatarra------------------- Tokar, Tomar, Tongar, Tonkan, Toor, Toori, Topa, Tour, Tunga" Also, Sardar Mohammad Chaudhry (late), IG Punjab, has metioned one of his friend/relative named DR -- TOOR in his book Jehan-e-Hairat and stated that TOOR is a Gujjar Gotra. As to the incident itself, I wish there was peace but clashes seem to continue and may be escalating as reported in Today's news: www.thenews.com.pk/updates.asp?id=53763 Toori's are putting up a good fight and appear to be holding their ground so far. Regards, Mohammad Malik

Dear Mr. Gorsi, Tanwar, Toonwar, Toor, Tuar, Tomar etc. are variation of Tanwar only. This is the Gujjar dynasty who founded Dhillika ( Delhi, the Capital city if of India). As per pehowa inscription the Tanwars were one of the fuedatory of Gujjar Pratihars when they founded Delhi in 736 AD. Meharauli ( Mihirawali) is named after the Gujjar Emperor Mihir Bhoja the Great which was the capital of Gujjar Tanwars. Mihir, Bhoja, Prabhas, Varaha (Baraha), were the other name of Mihir Bhoja Mahan. Bhopal ( Bhoja- Pal ), the present capital of M.P. in India is also named after him. Prabhas Patan in Gujarat is also named after him which was the capital cilty of Gujjar Solankis, who were also one of the Great fuedatories of the Gujjar Empire. Gujjar Chauhans ( Rulers of Sakambri), Gujjar Parmars ( rulers of Dhara, Ujjain), Gujjar Khatanas ( Rulers of Khattan and Kabul, Gujjar Bhatis ( Rulers of area around SWAT), Gujjar Chandella ( Rulers of Kalinjar ). Nagdi ( The rulers of Nagda, the present day Udaipur) , Bhadanas ( The rulers of Bhadranak area around Alwar and bayana ) were ther other Gujjar fuedatories of Gujjar Pratihar Empire.
