Nagara, Adhana and Ahirs
Nagara and Adhana Gotras of Gujjars are as Kasana, Bokkan, Chechi, Khatana, Meelu ( Ruler of Mul-sthan or Meelu-sthan=Multan) etc. etc.
Mathura was the winter capital of Gujjar Kushans and also a learning Centre of culture, religion and literature. Agra ( Agra-hara) was a place donated to Shiva Temple and Gujjars are Shiva worshippers from time immemorial. Present day Taj Mahal is built on Shiva Temple made by Gujjars. It was the place of worship and garden of Gujjar Samrat Mihir Bhoja Mahan.
The meaning of Agrahara ( now distorted to as agra) can be found in old Gujjar Kushan records. Agrahara used to be a place where all the revenues collected from the lands used to given to the temples for maintenance od day today affairs.
In Buddhist historical records of Gujjar Kushans the words Nagara, Adhana and Ahir is reffered many times. Nagara and Adhana are Gujjar gotras and Ahir is a separate tibe closely associated with Gujjars. It is frequently reffered in many Budhist records of Mathura that many scholars used to visit Mathura for learning from places like Nagara ( Nangrahar or present day Jalalabad ruled by Nagara Gujjars), Odiyana ( Udyanpur ruled by Odiayana or Adhana Gujjars) and Herat ( Ahirat ruled by Ahirs on behalf of Gujjar Kasanas. All these regions are in present day Afghanistan just about the region where Peshawar, the main capital of Gujjar Kusahans is located.
In Faridabad region (near Mathura) Nagara and Adhana Gujjars still follow the close brotherhood. Also Mathura region is dominated by Ahirs who also closely assocaited by Gujjars.

Chauhan Gotra of Gujjars Chauhan Gotra among Gujjars is one of the most celebrated gotra of Gujjars. Some of most celebrated Gujjar personalities of this celebarted gotra of Gujjars are:
1. Dadda Gujjar. Dadda was not the name of the this celabrated ruler but he is mentioned in one of the inscription recorded by his grand son Samanta Deva. Dadda in Gojari language means Great .rand Father. Bappa means grandfather. 2. Ghoga Bappa: The rulers of Punjab during Gujjar Pratihar Empire,Ghoga Bappa who sacrificed 24 of his sons. 3. Vigrah Raj Chauhan: the ruler of Sakambri, who played a very important to defeat the Pala forces. 4. God Dev Narayan who worshipped among Gujjars all over India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. 5. Prithvi Raj Chauhan, the last Gujjar Hindu emperor of India. His younger brother Hariraj, driven out one Gola of his borher out of Ajmer ( Gola means illegitimate son) , who was apppinted as Governor of Ajmer by Ghori. Kutubudin Aibak came to the rescue of this Gola and defeated Hariraj. Hari Raj could not digest this defeat and entered in to a burning pyre as was done by another Gujjar ruler Jaipal, the ruler of afghanistan after grtting defeated twice by Mehmud. After the death of Hariraj, no legal heir of Gujjar Chauhans were left alive and this Gola was made governor of Ranthambore by Kutubudin Aibak, which was called by a different name later.
6. The prime queen of Gujjar Samrat Mihir Bhoja Mahan belonged to this celebrated Chauhan gotra of Gujjars and thus the Gujjar Chauhans ensured the uninterruted rule of Mahedra Pal ( Bhanja of Gujjar Chauhans), Mahipal ( maternal Grandson of Gujjar Chauhans). Not only that even after the division of the Empire, Samrat Jaipal son of Samrat Mahipal ( also known as Kshitipal) was not only helped by Gujjars Chauhans against invading Mehmud, but also by other Gujjar rulers of that time like the Tanwars of Delhi, Gujjar Chandella of Kalinjar and Gujjar Parmars of Ujjain etc. etc.

Narration by Ferrista how one Gola of last Gujjar Chauhan emperor Prithvi Raj Chauhan was made Governor by Aibak at:
"The History of the Rise of Mohammedan Power in India, Volume 1, chpt. 47"
Kootb-ood-Deen is styled son by Mahomed Ghoory — is presented with a white elephant. — Ajmeer taken from the Raja, and bestowed on Gola, his natural son. — Hemraj, a relation, expels Gola. — Kootb-ood-Deen marches to oppose the usurper, who is defeated. — Ajmeer tributary to the Moslems. — Kootb-ood-Deen invades Guzerat — defeats the Hindoos, and returns to Hansy — visits Kohram and Dehly. ...
... ood-Deen, after the departure of the King, remained some days at Asny, where the Raja's treasure was found; thence returning to Dehly, he received advices that Hemraj, the cousin of the discomfited Prince of Ajmeer, issuing from the mountains of Alwur, had driven Gola Ray, the reigning Prince, towards Runtunbhore, and that Hemraj's General, Chutr-Ray, was moving with another army towards Dehly. Kootb-ood-Deen marched to oppose him; and separating twenty thousand horse from the rest of his army, engaged the enemy, and put ...
... ood-Deen having ravaged the country at leisure obtained much booty. He marched from thence to the fort of Hansy, which he repaired, and having visited Kohram returned to Dehly. Meanwhile advices reached him from the governor of the districts near Runtunbhore, that the brother of Gola Ray of Ajmeer, who lived in the hills, threatened to invade his territories. This news induced Kootb-ood-Deen to move to his relief, on which the enemy retired; and Kootb-ood-Deen paid a visit to Gola Ray, who entertained him magnificently, and at his departure, presented him with some fine jewels, and two tents of gold tissue. He soon after returned to Dehly; and it is related in the Taj-ool-Maasir, a work dedicated to Kootb-ood-Deen, that he wrote to the King ...

In the mountains of Alwar, there are a certain certain section of Gujjars still lives, who dont keep any contact with out side world. There only contact with the outside world is when local Baniyas ( Shopkeepers) goes there to supply essential items like Salt, clothes etc. in excahge of Ghee. These Gujjars are very very tough and of large builts. These Gujjars are certainly the close relatives and associates of last Gujjar Chauhan Hindu Emperor of India. I would request the local people, through this forum to visist them and found more about them and inform here. One of my cousin have visited them personally along with some Gujjar Sarpanch living in the plains below the hills. The life of these Gujjars are exactly similar to the Gujjars nomads living in J&K, Kahshmir, Pakistan and Afghanistan except that these are Hindus, and nomad Gujjars living in the other areas are Muslims.

Hello A P singh Bhaisaab, Thanks for these valuable findings, seems like you are moving really fast on the track of solving the puzzle of Gurjar Gotras and origins. Thanks for these great posts. You are definitely correct about Nagars, The Ruler of Mathura (feudatory to Kushans) was Subhahu Nagar. But there was a point which I noticed during my findings about Nagars, That the People who were called Nagars were actually from Yuezhi origin you can read the history of Yuezhis before they came to North India. You will be surprised to know that Nagars were the ancestors of Tagas, Taks, Tonks, Tongars, Tokas, Tagar, Dagar etc. (a few Jat gotras included). The Naga people[/b*] or Nagars designated themselves as Tak-shaks (From Taxila which was named after the famous Naga King Takshak. The area was called Takk pradesha and the natives were hence called Takkas
*Here we have to understand that Naga people only means people who worship Snakes and they were not snakes themselves (You can take the example of Kangaroo Players).
During that research I also found that the famous Gara people of central Asia were also from Yuezhi tribe. These Gara might be somewhere related to Nagara.
These Garas named Karakum Desert and Karakoram Darra. Both of the places are thickly populated with Gujjars till date.
Apart from that, another famous tribe Da or Dahae (applied for the people came from Da) which is the origin of one of the highest gotra of Jats Dahiya were also an offshoot of Yuezhis.

You can very well understand the amazing variation of a single tribe's name. This can help in understanding the formation of various sub clans of Tribes in Mid Asian region.

The Gujjar Gotras of Nagaras and Tanks have no link with Nag dynasty of Puranas at all. Some historians had wrongly connected without any base the Nagara rulers of Mathura to Nag Dynasty. These historains went completely blind about the time period of both these dynasties, while relating them with each other, which was having a difference minimum 5000 years. The Nag dynasty was somewhere located around present day Nagpur and surrounding regions of MP and Chattisgarh. The Taks ot Tank were Gujjar rulers of Takshshila and Tonk is Rajsahtahn must be other stronghold of Tank Gujjar rulers and have no link with Takshak rulers of Nags. The Naga people of Nagaland may be the actual descendents of Nag dynasty of Purans, who are completely different people having Mongolian structure and features whereas Gujjar Nagras are of purely Aryan structure. The Nagara Gujjars were rulers of Nagharhar region and were called Nagarhara+ Hara ( lords of Nangrahar).
The other areas ruled by Nagara Gujjars than Nagarahar ( present day Jalalabad in Afghanistan) were:
1. Nagarkot ( Present day Kangda in HP), during Gujjar Kushans Empire. 2. Gwalior ( During Gujjar Pratihar Empire). 3.Mathura ( During Gujjar Kushan Empire). 4. Nagda ( complete Nagda valley connecting present day Gujarat in India to Ujjain) and having its capital city at Nagda (present day Uadipur in rajasthan). Udai Singh Nagari was the last ruler of this dynasty who advanced from his capital at Nagda to Khanwa to take the battle with Babar. Udai Singh Nagara sacrificed his life in the battle in the initial advances where Babar was almost defeated. Later his capital was given to Rajputs, the descendents of Rana Sanga, who received this gift in exchange of females to Akbar. I have already given the documentary proof ( from Babar nama as well akbarnama) about this fact. 5. Probably Nagaur was also ruled by Gujjar Nagars.
Naga dynasty mentioned in Puranas has no connection at all with Nagara Gujjars and it is just similarity of name, which some illiterate people (about history) have connected to each others to express their knowlegde of language.
Nagara, Varajjara ( Bajjads) and Pratihars ( Padihars) belong to the same original ruling clan of Gujjars.
Like I have historiacl ividences about Vijay Singh khatana, the Gujjar Kahtana rulers of Khottan, I have details of Manav Sinh Nagara, ruling at the same time at Nagarhar, during Gujjar kushan Empire. Mathura, Nagarkot and Nagda ( present day Udai Pur) were the other capitals of Gujjar Nagaras.

Nagara Gujjars are related to lord Shiva and not Nag dynasty of Purans
Dear Ashok,
Many so called historians have related Nagara Gujjars with Nag dynasty of Hindu Purans and the reason was their comlete lack of knowlegde not only about history but also to sanskrit literature.
If at all there is any link of Nagara Gujjars to Nags is to be believed, it s" explanation certainly has to be as follows which has enough material evidences:
Nag= Sarp or Snake and also a dynasty among Hindus mentioned in Purans. Purans are nothing but dateless unwritten history having enough flexibilty to relate the stories and legends of one dynasty to others. Indian present history is written in a similar fashion as Purans and thus does not give any imporantce to any particular dynasty or period but confirms that the incident which has happened in some past but does not confirm the period and people who did it.
Nagaraja or Nagaraya or Nagara: The lord of Nags, the Lord Shiva.
This indicates that Gujjar Nagara are descendents of lord Shiva. As a matter of fact the Nagara Khand in Skand Purana belong to Nagara Gujjars and Skand is the name of Kartikeya, the Warrior General of all lords and in that case Nagara Gujjars must be related to Kartikeya. The Skandpuran is written at Anandpura in Lat Pradesh and Vaillabhatta Nagara, who was made the General of Gujjar armies by Samrat Mihir Bhoja Mahan came from this region.
The Sas- bahu temples and Chaturbhuja at both the places at Gwalior and Nagada ( Udaipur) were built by Nagara Gujjars and the the style of buildings the temples were called as Nagara style. It is not a coincidence that both these places have Sas-bahu Temples ( The temples built for the worship mother of lord Rama, the incarnation of lord Vishnu separately for the mother and wife of Gurjar Samrat Mihir Bhoja Mahan. The temple to worship lord Shiva was built at Agra, which is present day Taj-mahal, and Gurjar Samrat Mihir Bhoja Mahan used to worship lord Shiva here in this temple at Agra. This fact is recorded in the files of Archaeological Survey of India.

Bhumla Gotra of Gujjars Bhumla Gujjars were rulers of Bhutamblika ( also called Bhumili). This place was located somewhere in between present day Gujarat in India and Sindh in Pakistan. This region was included in Gujjar Pratihar Empire by Gujjar Pratihar Samrat Nagbhtta-I.
Dr. Dev Raj Bhumla, a prominent Gujjar scientist from Punjab was VC of Hissar University.
