Khatana Gotra of Gujjars.

In the Gujjar Imperial days the area beyond Kabul from the capital city of Kannauj was called as Khattan and rulers of Khattan were called as khatana Gujjars.

In punjabi folk songs the word Khattan still used for tough area ruled by Khatan Gujjars. For example:" Baraha Barsi khattan gaya see etc." Similarly the word Khattan is still used in rajasthani folklores for the area beyond Kabul glorifying these Great Gujjar Khatana warriors, the former rulers of this part of Afghanistan.

At the time of downfall of Mughal Empire one Khatana Gujjar kingdom was established in SWAT area. One can still find the millions of Khatan Gujjars in those frontier area confirming the fact the these warriors defended those forntiers from invaders for their Imperial Gujjar Pratihar overlords.

Sayyid Zaaman Shah, left his home in Takhta Band (Buner) to travel to Delhi, where he was granted lands by the Mughal Emperor, married the daughter of an Afghan Sardar in Chach, and had issue. He died at Pakli in Hazara district.
Sayyid Shah Gul [Shah Jee], married in Gandaf to Sayyid Sher Shah, and had issue.
Sayyid Azam Shah, married the daughter of Ahmad Ali Khan Palaal, niece of Khan Nawab Khan of Tanawal (her sister was married to Nawab Payinda Khan of Amb).

Miangul Abdul Hanan, born 1852, married 1stly, a daughter of a Sayyidi family, married 2ndly, a Princess of Chitral, married 3rdly, a lady from Jambil village and had issue. He died 1887.
Miangul Said Badshah Abdul Razzaq, (by the 1st wife), born 1880, married and had issue. He died 28th December 1903.

Miangul Amir Badshah Abdul Wahid, (by the 2nd wife), born 1884, married 1stly, an unnamed wife (married 2ndly, HH Sir Miangul ABD al-WADUD [BADSHAH SAHIB]), married 2ndly, an unnamed wife (married 2ndly, Miangul Shirin Sahib Abdul Manan). He died sp 1907.

Miangul Bahramand Khan, married 1stly (.....), married 2ndly, a daughter of HH Sir Miangul ABD al-WADUD [BADSHAH SAHIB], and had issue.

Badshah Sayyid ABD al-JABBAR KHAN Hafiz-e-Quran 1915/1917, son of Sayyid Mehmood Shah and grandson of the 1st Akhund of Swat, born c1877/1878, married 1stly, 1907, a daughter of the Nawab of Amb, married 2ndly, 1908, daughter of the Emir of Bukhara.

[cr.1930], born 1882, married 1stly, a cousin, daughter of Miangul Abdul Hanan, died 1903/1905, marrired 2ndly, the widow of his cousin, Miangul Amir Badshah Abdul Wahid, married 3rdly, daughter of a Sayyidi family, and had issue, 4 sons and 7 daughters. He died 1st October 1971.

HH Miangul JAHANZEB ABD al-HAQQ 1949/1987, born 5th June 1908, Waliahad [cr.1933], C.I.E., LL.D. [cr.1965], Khan-e-Azam of the Baluchistan States Union 1952/1955, state merged into Pakistan in 1969, married March 1925, his cousin, daughter of Miangul Shirin Sahib Abdul Manan, born December 1910, and had issue. He died 14th September 1987.

It was the practice in India and among the Gujjars to call the rulers by the names of the place ruled by them. The fact is confirmed by the Babar in Babarnama.

Some of the regions during during the Gujjar Pratihars were called by the yield of the crop during the year.

For Example:

1. Dor: Dor must given the name of the area which can be ploughed twice in a years. The area of present day Buladshar and Aligarh was called as Dor. The dynasty rylung Dor was called a Dor ( Dod, Dodoi, Doi, Dodh, Dodhoi, Dodhi, Dedhe etc. etc.).

2. Tiar: Tiar is area which can be ploughed thrice in a years. The area defined by this name must be around Pehowa near Kurukshetra and the rulers must be Gujjar Tuars which are called as , Tanwar, Toonwar, Toor, Tuar etc. etc.

Before founding Dhillika ( the present day Delhi). the Gujjars Tanwars must be the rulers of this area as the stone inscription found at Pehowa ( Old Prithudahaka) confirms the facts that they were made rulers of Delhi while being in service of Gujjar Pratihar overlords of Kannauj and their capital was Mehruali named after the Gujjar Emperor Mihir Bhoja the Great as Mihir-Awli.

3. Chawar is area called for the land which can be ploughed four times in a years and hence rulers of this area must have been called Chahar, Chawar, Chawara. The Great Gujjar Solankis of Sid Raj Jai Singh and Kumar Pal fame Patan situated on present day Gujarat in India were from this branch of Gujjars.

The other places like Khattan must be difficult terrains to rule and Khatana were the rulers of this area. Kahttan was place called in India for the area beyond Kabul as per Col Tod. and Punjabi Folksongs like Barah barsi Khatan Gaya see etc. etc.

Hence most of the Gujjars Gotras siginifies the area ruled by them during the Great Gujjar Pratihar Empire which existed for more than 300 years covering area of present Pakistan to Karnataka in India and bordering present Barma ( Mynmar) on the eastern side.

In Gojri language the word "Har" is used for eleders and not Jee.
Like "Maa Har"=Respectable Mother, Kaka Har= Respectable Uncle. Even if some elder is to be called by his name the word "Har" is added to it to show respect.

It is also used in the end in all the folksongs of Gujjars females while paying respect to the God.

The "Har: is probably used for God Shiva like Har-Har Mahdev. Here Har is used twice and before the name of the God Shiva.
Where the word Har is used for human being it was certainly to describe the power held by that individual.

For example:

Dor= Dohar: This is a great Gujjar clan who were one of the main fuedatory king of Gujjar Pratihar Emperors. The lord of the area which can be ploughed twice is a year. The Dor ( Dod, Dode, Dodhe, Dedhe, Dodoi. Doi) Gujjars were rulers of present day Aligarh and Bulandshar region which could be ploughed only twice is year during the days of Gujjar Pratihar Empire due to floods by river Holy Ganges. Now because of so many canals are taken out during British regime and this area has become more fertile than others.
Tin-Har= Tinhar ( The Tanwars, Tomars. Tuars. Toors etc.). This is a great Gujjar clan who were one of the other main fuedatory king of Gujjar Pratihar Emperors. The lord of the area which can be ploughed thrice is a year. Tanwars Gujjars were rulers of present day Delhi and Hariyana region during the days of Gujjar Pratihar Empire .

Char-Har= Chahar ( Chawad, Chawda Chap, Chaoptkat etc.) This is a great Gujjar clan Solanki and Baghela are the branch of this clan only. They were rulers of present day Gujarat on behalf of their Gujjar Pratihar overlords. The Basoyas of Delhi claim that they are of Solanki clan. Historical evidence proves that after the fall og Gujjar Solanki empire at Gujarat there was large scale migration of Gujjars to Delhi and that is the conclusive evidence of their claim.

Loh-har= Leva, Lohmor etc. The were rulers of Loh- Garh, the present day Lahore in Pakistan. There were millions of Lahore of Leva Gujjars in and around Gwalior. They moved in 16th. century to Hoshangabad ( Presently in MP) and adjoining areas in Gujarat.

Sardar Patel , The Iron man of India belonged to this celebrated clan of Gujjars.


The other Gujjars Gotras like Khatana Rana of Khotan in present day Afghanistan), Bhadana ( Rana of Bhadanak area in present day Rajasthan) have Rana word in place of Har. In the case of other Prominent Gotras like Nagdi or Nagari, Nagar etc. ( The Rulers of present day MP amd Rajasthan border incluing Udai Pur), Salambare ( The Rulers of Salambar in present day Rajasthan, Mandar ( The rulers of Mandor in present day Rajsathan, Mawai or Malwai, the rulers of Malwa etc., Bajad ( thE rulers of Vagad province in present day rajasthan the name of the place denotes that they were the rulers of that area.

As per the customs used during those days only the Rulers or their descendents could use the name of the place as title of their clan.

The Gotra of Gurjar Pratihar named as " Prithvi Har that means the God of whole Universe"

As I told earlier the meaning of Gujjar Gotras like Tanwar, Dor, Chahar, etc. denotes that they were lord of certain part of area they ruled for their Gujjar Pratihar overlordsand "Har" is still used to their Gotra to describe thier status as lord of the land.

Har is a very important word of Gujjar History and Col Todd also tried his best to describe the same but he was searching it among others than the Gujjar Imperials.

Gujjar Kushanas are said to be the descendents of Kush the younger son of Lord Rama whereas Leva Gujjars are said to the descendents of Loh the Elder son of Lord Rama and rulerd Lahor during the Gujjar Kushan and Gujjar Pratihar Empires.

The Pratihars are said to be the descendents of Laxmana, the younger brother of Lord Rama.
