Hello Deepak,
Your friend is misinforming you, and is trying to spread wrong info among all. I dont know the reason, but you can ask Jasbir to call me up and I'll ask him a few questions about Sardar Patel's family and u all will see "how right he is".
The fact is Nadiad is still populated with Gurjars and they simply call themselves gurjars and not leva patidars or kurmi, though they sometimes call them as Leva Gurjars but never call them leva patidars. Leva patidars (though originated from gurjars only) now consider themselves a totally different community and tried to include Sardar patel in them many a times.
But very well educated and well known Gujjars like Rajesh pilot claimed that Sardar Patel was a Gurjar, and many gujjar leaders from Kashmir said that when they met patel, he himslef told them that I am also a gujjar and hence we are related by blood.
Apart from that there are thousands of Gurjars from Gujart who have confirmed that Sardar Patel was a Gurjar by caste and he was not a Leva Patidar. BTW You can call him kunbi as Kunbi is more a profession than a caste name, the farmers and anybody taking farming as a profession was called a kunbi in 18th century.

Please read the book “The Indomitable Sardar” published by Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan and written by Mr. KL Punjabi (ICS)who worked under Sardar Patel in Home Ministry and knew him very well. It is a very good book and we may learn many things to get motivated and to behave bravely in adverse condition from the great character of Iron Man of India. I did not respond to this query earlier since Sardar Patel belonged to India. We can only feel more prouder that he has proved that he had Imperial blood of Gujjars running in his veins and could handle the former vassals of British Empire well to integrate them in to Great India.
This is what is mentioned in this book about his birth:
Sardar Vallabbhai Patel belong to famous clan of Lewa Gujars who came from Punjab and occupied the rich charotar land between Mahi and Tapti rivers. They were man of strong passion and and high tempers and when aroused obeyed no law but that of their own.
