Good News:
Gujjars determined to keep Dausa Lok Sabha seat
Binoy Valsan JAIPUR, March 15: The Gujjars of Rajasthan, having been deprived scheduled tribe (ST) status, are now depending on their community members from Jammu Kashmir to help them sabotage Congress and BJP poll prospects in the coming Lok Sabha elections. The Guijar community is relying on Gujjars from Jammu and Kashmir, who enjoy ST status, to contest on behalf of the local Gujjar community for the ST-reserved Lok Sabha seats in Gujjar-dominated areas, including the high profile constituency of Dausa. The delimitation of Gujjar-dominated areas as ST-reserved constituencies has resulted in political parties opting for Meena candidates, the arch rivals of the Gujjars. The Congress is likely to nominate union minister Mr Namonarain Meena as their Dausa candidate, instead of Gujjar leader Mr Sachin Pilot. In an attempt to prevent Dausa from falling into the Meena fold, Gujjar leader Rtd Col. Kirorisingh Bhainsala and his supporters have decided to field Mr Qammar Rabbani Chechi, a Muslim Gujjar from Rajouri district in Jammu Kashmir, as an independent candidate. “I have already met him. But the ultimate decision is left with the community members,” said Guijar leader, Rtd Col. Kirori Singh Bhainsala. Mr Qammar Rabbani is a 45-year-old Kashmiri Gujjar and had previously contested as an independent candidate from Jammu in the 1999 Lok Sabha elections. He has been based in Jaipur since 1974 and has confirmed that he is actively considering the offer to stand for LS elections from Dausa. “I have been approached. As per section four of the Representation of People’s Act I can contest ST-reserved seats anywhere except Assam, by virtue of being an ST member in Jammu and Kashmir,” said Mr Rabbani. A massive mahapanchayat will be convened on 19 March at Bandhikui, where the official proclamation of the Gujjar poll agenda is expected to be made in the presence of Rtd Col. Kirori Singh Bhainsala. “The Brahmins and Agarwal community members have already pledged their support. We have lost our trust in both the Congress and the BJP, but we have the goodwill of the rest of the communities, who don't want a political fiefdom run by the Meenas,” said Mr Roop Singh, a Guijar leader and close associate of Rtd Col. Bhainsala.

In 2004 general elections, Gujars won three parliament seats i.e. Dausa (Rajasthan), Faridabaad (Hariyana) and Gwaliar (MP). All the three belonged to Congress Party. This time, in Rajasthan alone the Gujars are in a strong position at Bhilwara, Jaipur (rural) and Tonk-Sawai-madhopur .Their two strong holds i.e. Bharatpur and Dholpur-Karauli seats have been reserved for SCs. But the crucial issue always is how many tickets they are given by the two national parties i.e. Congress and BJP. If they are not given proper representation by these parties, the Gujars should vote for the Gujar candidate whether he is from BSP/ SP …..or even “independent”. The prosperous Gujars of Delhi/ Haryana/ UP (like Sh. Sukhbir Singh Jaunpuriya) may explore their chance from Rajasthan even if they are denied tickets by Congress/BJP. I also wish a nation wide campaign/ awareness programme from the well to do Gujars of Delhi who can direct the community for intelligent as well as tactical voting in the election 2009. Hello Satyendra Ji, Gujjars had 7 MPs in 2004. Mohd Aslam from Jammu, INC (Rajya Sabha) Sachin Pilot from Dausa, INC Avtar bhadana from Faridabad, INC Ramsevak babuji Gwalior MP, INC Chaudary Munavvar hassan, Saharanpur, UP. Samajvadi party. Hari Singh Chawda, banaskantha, Gujarat, INC Dilip Singh Judev, Chhatisgarh, MP, BJP

This is good move by the Gurjjars otherwise both Mr. Bidhuri of BJP and Mr. Kanwar Singh Tanwar (BSP) will be defeated by the Congress candidate Sajjan Kumar who is said to have played an active role in the killing of Sikh brothers in 1984 riots.
Moreover the Gujjar Tanwars are founders and rulers of Delhi and once more at least the Meharauli seat should be handed over democatically to a Gujjar Tanwar.

New Delhi After the Jats dominated the political and caste canvas of the Capital last week, the Gurjjars tried to make their presence felt by organising a ‘Gurjjar Mahapanchayat’ in Chhattarpur on Sunday. With Delhi going to the Lok Sabha polls on May 7, the Jats had organised a ‘mahapanchayat’ last Sunday to protest against the BJP’s denial of a Lok Sabha ticket to Parvesh Verma.
Gurjjar village pradhans from at least 36 villages under the South Delhi constituency attended the ‘mahapanchayat’ on Sunday to support Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Kanwar Singh Tanwar, who will contest from the South Delhi seat. Tanwar (49), incidentally, was the richest candidate in the Assembly elections last year with assets worth Rs 150 crore. He fought from Chhattarpur where he lost to Congress candidate Balram Tanwar.
While the Congress has pitted Jat candidate and sitting MP Sajjan Kumar on the seat, the BJP has fielded Gurjjar MLA Ramesh Bidhuri from the constituency. Despite his defeat in the Assembly elections last year, Kanwar hopes to add a third dimension of Gurjjar votes to the BSP’s traditional vote bank of Dalits and Muslims. Together with the Gurjjars, they make up for a large chunk of the electorate. With more than two lakh population, Gurjjar votes could be critical in the elections. Dominant among them are those who belong to Lohiya (two villages), Ambavata (one village), and Tanwar (eight villages) gotras.
The Gurjjar population is localised mainly in the villages of Chhattarpur, apart from Badarpur and Tughlaqabad. Other Assembly constituency seats like Ambedkar Nagar and Deoli are dominated by the Jatavs. Mehrauli has a sizeable Muslim population. Leaders from both groups were present at the ‘mahapanchayat’. Tanwar is banking on the inroads made into the community by his party through regular bhaichara meetings and the reported disenchantment with the Congress and the BJP after protests over reservation in Rajasthan last year.
“They made promises which they failed to keep,” Tanwar said referring to the Gurjjar agitation in Rajasthan. “Panchon ke faisle ko Parmeshwar bhi nahi badal sakta. The BJP has betrayed us in Rajasthan where 70 of our people died. The Congress overlooked the issue. Now it is time to decide and we are with Tanwar,” said Jagdish Pradhan of Dera village
near Ghitorni.
Tanwar, however, remained evasive on the issue. “We are not making any commitment. Behenji (Mayawati) has said she will give reservation to upper castes but we will see. We want development in the villages,” Tanwar said.

I would request the Gurjjars of other places to find a place a similar strategy in place to avoid the division of Gurjjar votes.

Please refer my submission dated 17.12.2008, “……….Sometimes all the political parties give tickets to Gujars from a particular place and as a result at few places due to division of votes, the candidate of another community wins the election……….” There is identical situation in South Delhi where both Mr. Vidhuri of BJP and Mr. Kanwar Singh Tanwar of BSP will face tough competition from the Congress candidate Sajjan Kumar who belongs to very clever community i.e. “Jat”. The Gujars of South Delhi should decide well in advance to vote in favour in either of these two and give clear message in this regard so that the candidate who is having community’s support may mobilize the other electorate also that he is in direct fight. Even in an ideal situation (which is impossible for Gujars), one of them may surrender the "ticket" otherwise there is strong possibility that this golden opportunity may leave ‘Gujars of Delhi’ empty handed once again.

In Rajasthan, Congress has given tickets to 6 Jats, 4 Rajputs, 3 Pandits, 2 Meenas and 1 each to Gujar (Sachin Pilot himself), Muslim, Jain and Kalbi.
The only other ticket (which is of any importance) given to Gujar community by the Congress Party in the entire Northern India is Faridabad(Haryana) .
